Published on: 05/15/2013

Dr. Narendra Kini, MD, MHA, President and CEO of Miami Children’s Hospital (MCH), has been named a recipient of Modern Healthcare’s CEO IT Achievement Award 2013. The awards, co-sponsored by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), recognize healthcare CEOs who demonstrate leadership and a commitment to using IT to advance their organizations' goals.

A five-judge panel consisting of three former CEO IT honorees and two Chief Information Officers selected by HIMSS evaluated the achievements of nominees submitted by Modern Healthcare readers. John Bluford, President and CEO of Truman Medical Centers in Kansas City, was also named a winner. Dr. Kini and Mr. Bluford join the 26 other CEOs who have earned this honor since its creation in 2003.

Dr. Kini has served as MCH’s President and CEO since 2005. During his tenure, MCH’s world-class care has expanded into Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties through its outpatient centers, with most offering a wide range of pediatric services that include sub-specialist visits, urgent care services and rehabilitation including physical, occupational and speech and language therapies. MCH’s Telemedicine program, which is part of Dr. Kini’s vision to provide access to advanced medical care to children anywhere around the world, will soon offer virtual subspecialist consultations with MCH doctors.

The judges for this year’s Modern Healthcare award cited Dr. Kini’s "superlative patient engagement strategy and advocacy efforts at the state level," as well as "an innovative approach to utilizing smartphone applications to improve patient care and business processes."

Dr. Kini will be featured in Modern Healthcare in a special section that will appear in the Monday, June 3 issue of the magazine. The CEOs will be honored on September 18 in Washington during National Health IT Week.
