Cristina's Diabetes Success Story

Published on: 01/12/2012

“At the age of eleven I was sent to the Variety Children’s Hospital ER for severe dehydration and other related symptoms. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes - juvenile diabetes in the ER. I clearly remember the doctor speaking with my mother who did not speak clear English. He was so patient with her and his sincerity I still remember to this very day. He asked her my symptoms and then as he leaned over me and asked me to exhale, which I did, he then told my mother that I had diabetes. I could see that she was afraid— it was written all over her face.

The doctor reassured my mother and explained to her that my breath was “sugary sweet”. He then had her explain it to me and I was amazed at how his explanation made perfect sense. I was saved that day from a severe diabetic coma. I was at Variety Children’s and then Nicklaus Children's for about three weeks and I remember everyone just being incredibly nice in dealing with me and with my mom.

I now work for Nicklaus Children's Hospital, formerly Miami Children's Hospital, and I always have a "pay it forward" mentality. I am here for the children the same way they were here for me as a child. Thank you to all that make the illness less scary by turning it around and making it fun and less frightening to us children! “
