“Colton was flown from Key West to Nicklaus Children's Hospital, formerly Miami Children's Hospital, for respiratory failure and septic shock because of a surgery he had the day after he was born. The scar tissue had injured parts of his intestines causing bacteria to get into his blood stream.
Colton was admitted to the PICU at Nicklaus Children's Hospital and learned he needed another surgery. We were told that our son was very sick. The neurology team told us Colton was also having seizures, which ultimately caused him to have a stroke. The team in the PICU decided to place Colton in a Coma for a week to give his brain a rest in hopes that the seizures would subside. Tests showed he could be blind, deaf, and have no mobility in his arms, legs, or any other body part.
“Without Nicklaus Children's Hospital doctors, we would not have had our son home to celebrate his first Christmas. There are no words to describe the thanks and gratitude we have towards Nicklaus Children's.”
Today, 5 months later, Colton is finally home and doing fantastic. He is able to hold his head up, grabs onto toys, kicks his legs and moves his arms. He is following and tracking toys so we know he can see something.
