Amelia's Success Story

Published on: 01/12/2012
“My daughter Amelia was born with gastroschisis in April of 2005. She was born almost six weeks early, with a very large hernia involving most of her intestines, her stomach and both ovaries. She was taken into surgery the day she was born to repair the gastroschisis and to have a central line put in. A few weeks later she became very ill, and was no longer tolerating the small oral feeds she was receiving. Tests showed she had a perforation in her bowel and was transferred to Nicklaus Children's Hospital, formerly Miami Children's Hospital, via Life Flight for emergency surgery. This was the day of Amelia’s grandmother’s 50th birthday, and all of our family was gathered together, but a phone call had everyone quickly en route to Miami to be there for this surgery. It was the most difficult day for us, but the Life Flight team was amazing and very supportive during the flight to Miami. Throughout the 85 day stay at the hospital, I spoke with many doctors and nurses who were extremely patient and helpful.”
