The first 12 months: how important is it?

What is age-appropriate gross motor and fine motor develop during the first year of life? During this informative session, an occupational therapist (OT) and physical therapist (PT) will collaborate and discuss age-appropriate development within the first 12 months. Each therapist will provide expertise and familiarize parents and caretakers with various developmental milestones and time frames. Along with, age-appropriate gross motor and fine motor development, the therapists will discuss various “red flags” to note in developing children, as well as ways to address, facilitate and promote the best development for the child. Lastly, they will discuss the availability, access and importance of early intervention services for children who do present with delayed fine motor and gross motor development.

About the speakers:

Alicia Delgado MS, OTR/L is a licensed occupational therapist. She has been treating pediatric patients for four years, within various outpatient settings. Alicia is a 2010 graduate of Florida State University with a bachelor of science degree in rehabilitation services. She graduated Florida International University in 2012 with a master’s of science degree in occupational therapy. Alicia has experience in treating patients from birth to age 18, with an emphasis on children from birth to 3 years of age. Alicia has received training and attended continuing education classes with a primary focus on age-appropriate pediatric development, kinesiotaping for pediatrics, as well as meltdowns vs. tantrums for a pediatric population.

Vanessa Strauss PT, DPT, C/NDT graduated from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor with a bachelor’s degree in premedical sciences and German. She received her doctoral degree in physical therapy from the University of Miami. Vanessa expanded her knowledge in the field and became neuro-developmental treatment certified.
Currently at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital she is an outpatient physical therapist who works with the cerebral palsy/wheelchair clinic as well as research studies. She has experience as a pediatric physical therapist in prescribed pediatric extended care, outpatient and school settings. All of her past experiences have helped her become the dedicated clinician she is today.
