Miami Children’s Health System is the recipient of the 2017 Nicholas E. Davies Award of Excellence, presented by Healthcare Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS), a non-profit organization focused on better health through information technology. The Davies Award recognizes organizations that have utilized health information technology to substantially improve patient outcomes and value. Nicklaus Children’s Hospital is the first hospital in Florida to receive the Davies Enterprise Award.

MCHS fully committed itself to healthcare IT in 2012 with an electronic medical record implementation that resulted in a fully integrated solution for clinicians and the financial team, with the goal of advancing patient safety and clinical data access.  This commitment has led to substantial clinical advancements, including a reduction in blood transfusion errors to zero through use of barcode technology, a 26 percent decrease in asthma readmission rates through improved patient adherence to the home plan of care, and a reduction in catheter-associated urinary tract infections through implementation and monitoring of industry best practices.

“Miami Children’s Health System recognizes the important role information technology plays in the delivery of care. We are honored and privileged to be recognized by HIMSS for demonstrating excellence through information technology.  It is a testament of our ongoing commitment to provide the best care possible to the families we serve,” said Ed Martinez, Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer.

“Miami Children’s Health System leverages information and technology to ensure that every child receives the highest quality of care,” said Jonathan French, CPHIMS, senior director, quality and patient safety, and director, Davies Award of Excellence Program, HIMSS. “MCHC leverages clinical decision support and care management tools to improve kids’ management of asthma and keep them out of the hospital. For inpatients, MCHS has significantly reduced the risk of hospital acquired infections through EHR-enabled standardized care. HIMSS congratulates the team members of Miami Children’s Health System on being selected as a 2017 HIMSS Enterprise Davies Award recipient.”

Miami Children’s Health System will be recognized at the HIMSS18 Awards Gala taking place on Thursday, March 8, 2018 in Las Vegas. For more information, please visit HIMSSconference.org.
