What are vascular birthmarks?
A birthmark is a discolored and/or raised area of the skin that is apparent at birth or within a few weeks of birth. Birthmarks are made up of malformed pigment cells or blood vessels and require careful and assesment by a team of specialists.
About the International Birthmark Institute
The International Birthmark Institute (TIBI) at Nicklaus Children's Hospital, is a comprehensive multi-specialty center of excellence for the evaluation and management of all birthmarks with special expertise in vascular birthmarks or vascular anomalies in newborn babies and children, including hemangiomas and vascular malformations.
Learning Objectives
Following this activity, the participants should be able to:
- Diagnose an infantile hemangioma, a capillary malformation, a lymphatic malformation, a venous malformation, and an AV malformation
- Understand the latest developments in laser, interventional radiology, and surgical advances to recommend the best course of treatment for these conditions
- Understand the latest genetic developments associated with these conditions
- Understand the vast psychological effects of these conditions
