What are pharyngitis and tonsillitis?

Pharyngitis and tonsillitis are infections of the throat region. In general, pharyngitis refers to an infection of the throat, whereas tonsillitis refers to an infection specifically of the tonsils. If both the throat and the tonsils are infected, it is called pharyngotonsillitis.

What causes pharyngitis and tonsillitis?

Bacterial or viral infections can cause pharyngitis and tonsillitis. Both pharyngitis and tonsillitis are contagious and as a result, can be passed from one child to another.

What are the symptoms of pharyngitis and tonsillitis?

Sore throat, headache, fever, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, difficulty swallowing and general malaise are common symptoms of pharyngitis and tonsillitis.

What are pharyngitis and tonsillitis care options?

The symptoms of pharyngitis and tonsillitis can be alleviated with fluids, throat lozenges and over-the-counter pain relievers. Antibiotics are prescribed for bacterial pharyngitis and tonsillitis, but not for viral pharyngitis and tonsillitis.
