Nasal Congestion

Also known as: nasal obstruction, stuffy nose, obstructed nose, diminished airflow through the nose.

What is nasal obstruction/congestion?

Nasal obstruction or congestion simply refers to the inability to breathe properly through the nose. It’s a broad term that can refer to everything from the typical stuffy nose that accompanies a cold or flu, to a structure problem that obstruct the nose, such as a deviated septum.

What causes nasal obstruction/congestion? 

Infections that cause respiratory illnesses are the most common causes of nasal obstruction and congestion. Other causes include inflamed tissue, nasal polyps, enlarged adenoids, deviated septum and others.

What are the symptoms of nasal obstruction/congestion? 

Symptoms of nasal obstruction and congestion can include trouble breathing through the nose, increased breathing through the mouth, bad breath, sore throat, sleep apnea, and even changes to the structure of the face over time.

What are nasal obstruction/congestion care options?

Treating the underlying condition, nasal sprays, saline rinses, avoiding allergies, antihistamines and allergy shots are all potential treatments for nasal obstruction and congestion. When the nasal obstruction and congestion is caused by a structural problem, surgery may be the potential treatment.
