Stress Fractures

Also known as: hairline fractures

What are stress fractures?

Tiny cracks in bones are known as stress fractures. Though not as severe as some types of broken bones, they can cause troublesome symptoms and sometimes be difficult to treat.

What causes stress fractures?

Unlike other types of broken bones, stress fractures are due to overuse or repetitive motion. When the muscles can no longer absorb the shock of a particular activity, a stress fracture can occur.

What are the symptoms of stress fractures?

Pain and limited mobility are the typical symptoms of stress fractures.

What are stress fracture care options?

In most cases, the only treatment for stress fractures is to rest and avoid the offending activity for several weeks. Casting or braces can help speed the healing process along.
