Oromandibular Limb Hypoplasia Syndrome

What is oromandibular limb hypoplasia syndrome?

This syndrome is a very rare group of a number of conditions all of whom have congenital (occurring before birth) malformations of the tongue, upper and lower jaw (maxilla and mandible), with some having variable limb abnormalities as well.

What causes oromandibular limb hypoplasia?

While there are no definitive causes known as yet, genetic factors, a number of prescription medications that the mother takes during pregnancy, other environmental factors and blood vessel problems may all play a role.

What are the symptoms of oromandibular limb hypoplasia?

While malformation of the mouth, jaw, tongue, arms or legs are the primary symptoms of oromandibular limb hypoplasia, other symptoms include difficulty opening the mouth, speech, eating talking or breathing problems, drooling and failure to thrive.

What are oromandibular limb hypoplasia care options?

Depending on the specific abnormalities present, treatments may include; surgery to correct many of the malformations and improve appearance, speech, feeding and neuropsychological support.
