Hemihyperplasia

Also known as: hemihypertrophy.

What is hemihyperplasia?

When one side of the body, such as the legs, arms, face or some combination of these, grows more than the other, this is known as hemihyperplasia.

What causes hemihyperplasia?

Hemihyperplasia can occur as an isolated finding with unknown cause but often occurs as part of certain genetic conditions, such as Beckwith-Widemann syndrome.

What are the symptoms of hemihyperplasia?

In mild cases, only moderate physical differences between the two sides of the body are noticeable. If the changes become severe, it can cause difficulty with walking, eating, breathing, seeing or with other bodily functions.

What are hemihyperplasia care options?

Many times no treatment is need. However, when hemihyperplasia is interfering with normal function, various surgical procedures can often be utilized to treat the symptoms of hemihyperplasia and even out the appearance of the two sides of the body.
