What are inherited rhythm disorders (IRDs)?
Inherited rhythm disorders are arrhythmias, or irregular heartbeats, that are inherited from family members. There are several different types of inherited rhythm disorders that each cause a different type of irregular heartbeat.
What causes inherited rhythm disorders?
As the name implies, inherited rhythm disorders are passed down from parents to their children through the family genes.
What are the symptoms of inherited rhythm disorders?
Various types of irregular heartbeats are the primary symptoms of inherited rhythm disorders. Many of these disorders can be dangerous if not treated. Fainting, dizziness, heart attack and sudden death are possible complications of untreated inherited rhythm disorders.
What are inherited rhythm disorders care options?
Many inherited rhythm disorders require both medication and the implantation of a medical device to control heart rhythm such as a pacemaker or cardioverter defibrillator. Lifestyle changes related to diet and physical activity may also be necessary

Naialee Perez had just given birth to her first child, a baby boy named Liam, when a category five hurricane was making its way towards her hometown in the island of Puerto Rico. Liam was on a ventilator and undergoing treatment for a congenital heart defect in Hospital del Niño in San Juan while those on the island prepared for what would become one of the most catastrophic hurricanes in its history.
While he was still inside his mother’s womb, Luife was diagnosed with transposition of the great arteries, a congenital heart defect. Shortly after birth, Luife was taken by ambulance to the cardiac team at Nicklaus Children’s. The pediatric cardiology team took Luife’s heart apart, piece by delicate piece, and successfully, put it back together. Today, Luife is a healthy, active and outgoing 8-year-old boy who wears his “Scar of Honor” with pride.
